2020–21 Ancil Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism Virtual Award Ceremony and Q&A

Join the UO School of Journalism and Communication for the 2021 virtual Ancil Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism ceremony to celebrate the tough calls journalists made in the field in 2019 and 2020. This event is free, but registration is required.

You'll hear firsthand from the 2021 winning journalists of Anchorage Daily News and ProPublica's Local Reporting Network, who partnered to publish "Unheard," a compilation of 29 stories from women and men speaking about their experiences with sexual assault.

You’ll also hear from 2020 Payne Award winners Emily Hoerner and Rick Tulsky of Injustice Watch, who published an exposé of racist, misogynistic, homophobic, and violent social media content posted by more than 2,000 police officers around the nation. 

The winners and 2021 finalists will discuss their stories and behind-the-scenes ethical decisions during a moderated conversation and audience Q&A. The event will be livestreamed and recorded.

The Ancil Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism was established in 1999 by the family of Seattle broadcasting legend Ancil Payne to honor the difficult ethical choices journalists make behind the scenes that are often invisible to the public.
