So excited about that quinceañera project!

01:00:39
Yes! Celebration discourses!

01:00:55
Even death is turned into a party/celebration.

01:01:09
Cinco de Mayo, anyone?

01:01:25
Yes, definitely Cinco de Mayo.

01:01:32
Also came from an assimilation of religious celebrations and not celebrated in all Latinx countries

01:02:11
Great point, Johanna.

01:02:43
Exactly flattening of difference

01:02:49
^^^

01:14:46
Or cheapening the narrative by trivializing it. Thinking about when KFC made that ad where the shadow was the closed fist symbol used for BLM. Very interesting point Ariana

01:18:15
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel as though Hispanic Heritage month truly focuses on Mexican culture and celebrations.

01:19:39
@cindy :O

01:19:58
Agreed Johanna

01:29:02
Same with Lupita Nyong’o.

01:29:34
Completely

01:30:17
So many dialects that are very specific down to a village.

01:30:35
Ariana is now able to share screen

01:30:57
And many believe Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence

01:31:17
Mexico has at least 60 different Indigenous languages. They are separate languages—not dialects. They are dialects in each language. Miguel Villeagas is a trilingual Mixteco rapper who raps in Mixteco, Spanish, andEnglish. He has a rap called Mixteco es un language no un dialecto.

01:31:29
^^^ Lynn!

01:31:41
Yes great clarification

01:32:44
Exactly, Juan! Such a great point.

01:32:58
When I was I studying in Mexico they had mentioned over 200 Mexican languages. Not sure if that has changed or gotten smaller.

01:33:03
Link to Ina Isu (Miguel Villegas) video of his trilingual rap on this point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeXkVw4Y8A8

01:33:56
Dia de los Muertos got joined by all Saints day and is celebrated around the same time

01:34:01
The number of languages in Mexico keep growing as they get reclassified…there are a lot. We have identified 26 different Indigenous language from Mexico and Guatemala in the state of Oregon.

01:34:09
Hondurans don't celebrate it

01:34:14
I agree that specifically in Mexican media, this white image of Mexicans is strongly portrayed. There is a very big colorist culture in Mexico which excludes/pushes away darker skinned or more ethnic looking Mexicans from media. Even when they are showed, especially in dramas, they are portrayed as “lower class.”

01:35:57
How do we decenter “Hispanic Heritage Month” in our own universities through curriculum, classes, longer term projects

01:37:02
I thought the idea of Hispanic Heritage was truly suppose to embrace that many Latinx countries celebrate their independence on that week of September

01:37:22
At least Mexico and Central America

01:39:17
👏

01:41:50
Important to also pay attention to who we are citing and also teaching. Great point.

01:41:54
Especially graduate classes. I believe my first term in grad school I only read White men.

01:43:10
These are such great conversations. I am so glad I had the chance to tune in this evening. I have to get going now, though. I appreciate all the work you all are doing!! And yes, Dr. Valdivia— we need to diversify and intersectionalize ALL subjects!

01:43:33
Yes, this idea that Hispanic/latinx/etc is an elective rather than core curriculum needs to be revamped.

01:43:49
Yassss Cindy!

01:49:20
Great point Audrey.

01:52:15
Thanks to all for an insightful conversation

01:52:23
Thank you Chris and everyone in the panel!
